Safety First: 6 Signs of Brake Failure

The Car Doctors Tire Pros Blog

Without a doubt the brake system in your vehicle is the most important safety feature it has. It is integral to always take excellent care of the brakes, which means getting them repaired as soon as they begin to give you trouble. The following are six common signs it is time for brake repair right away!

Car Pulls to the Side

If you hit the brake pedal and your vehicle tries to go left or right then you likely have brake pads that are unevenly worn. It could also mean that you have a stuck wheel cylinder or impurities in the brake fluid. These issues greatly hinder your ability to brake effectively and the issue should be immediately repaired.

Spongy Brake Pedal

When you hit the brake pedal there should be some resistance. If you are able to easily push the pedal to the floor you likely have very little brake pads left or their could be air in the brake lines.

Vibrations

You should not feel any odd vibrations when you hit the brakes. If the brake pedal, steering wheel or car as whole seems to vibrate as you brake you likely have warped rotors or drums. These parts are what the pads grab in order to create the friction to slow the vehicle and if they aren't smooth your braking ability will be greatly reduced.

Brake Fluid Leak

If you notice a puddle or even a drip of clearish-brown liquid under your car, likely near a wheel, then you might have a brake fluid leak and you should not drive your vehicle. Call your mechanic right away to have the car towed and repaired.

Grinding Noise

A grinding or squealing noise that occurs when you hit the brakes will generally happen for one of two reasons. The first is because your brake pads are designed with a mechanism that creates the noise when pads get low as a way of warning the driver it's time for repair. The second is because your brake pads are so low or completely gone that metal is grinding on metal.

ABS Light

The ABS light on your dashboard stands for anti-lock brake system. If this light turns on it's time to head to the auto repair right away, as sensors are detecting some sort of trouble.
