What is a Tune Up?

The Car Doctors Tire Pros Blog

For many years people have been using the term tune up when talking about having their vehicle serviced. But what does a tune up really entail? Well it's an ever evolving term that originated from mechanics actually tuning vehicles, particularly carburetors and other parts that are no longer used on modern vehicles, which have become heavily computerized. But alas, the term endears. Saying exactly what a tune up is can be difficult, as the answer may vary mechanic to mechanic, but here are a few tasks that are often associated with a tune up service.

Belt and Hose Inspection

Vehicles use a variety of belts and hoses to conduct different jobs. These include hoses that are part of the cooling system and your timing belt. The technician will check over these vital parts and if deemed necessary conduct a replacement.

Fuel Injector Service

Most modern gas powered vehicles are fuel injected, whereas in the past they used a carburetor. After miles and miles of use injectors may need to be cleaned in order to ensure proper fuel flow.

Spark Plug Replacement

The original tune up included the replacement of dirty and corroded spark plugs and spark plug wires. Today most vehicles still use these parts and still need to be replaced on occasion.

Vacuum Check

A vacuum check will be conducted to ensure that there are no air leaks or exhaust restrictions in the vacuum lines.

Filter Replacements

Filter replacements are another part of the tune up that have lasted the generations. Air filters, fuel filters, cabin filters and others may be replaced in order to restore your ride's power, fuel efficiency and comfort.

Check for Fault Codes

It seems like today's cars are well aware of problems before they ever become visibly apparent. When you bring your car in for service a technician will plug it into a computer to get a fault code reading, should it need one, to ensure everything is running properly.

Tune ups are generally done when a car begins running rough, suffers a drop in fuel mileage or is having some other driveability issue. However, they should be completed every 10,000 to 20,000 miles after a car hits the 100K mileage mark.
