When Should I get New Tires?

Buying new tires is something that people do so infrequently it is often forgotten about until a now or never situation occurs. It is important to pay attention to the health of your tires as they are the only thing that is making contact with the ground while you're driving. Unhealthy tires can result in control issues which may lead to an accident. The following are several circumstances in which you will want to head to the tire store. If you're unsure of the needs of your car always ask a professional technician for their assessment.

When the tread depth is low

One of the most important things to keep tabs on is the depth of the tread on your tires. The tread is the gaps between the rubber that routes water, road debris and overall provides a footprint for the vehicle. Low tread levels can result in hydroplaning and other issues that may result in a crash.

If your tires have suffered damage

If you notice that the vehicle's tires are cracking or bubbling, either on the sidewalls or in the tread, than be sure to head to a tire shop right away. These issues may put you at risk of a blowout flat tire.

If you need tires for a different season, such as winter tires

It is important that your tires are capable of handling the season's weather. In winter when snow and rain are more prevalent you should utilize winter tires. There are all season tires available, so be sure to speak with a tire technician about what is best for your vehicle and your specific situation.

If the car has been sitting for many years

If a car has not been in use much or at all for a few years and has been sitting on its tires it is likely best to purchase new tires before putting the car back into service. Old tires are susceptible to going flat or blowing out.

If you feel like your steering performance is lacking

While it may not be the tires fault, steering and performance issues could be tire related. Head to the shop to find out if you may need new tires.
