Why is my car shaking?
While the check engine light is great for letting drivers know of some problems the best way to detect an some issue is by using your own senses. Cars and trucks have multiple ways of letting their drivers know that something is amiss. Odd smells and strange noises are very common ways of figuring out problems, but vibrations are also a sure sign that something is up. If your car starts to shake and shimmy it could be caused by one of these common automotive issues.
Shaking Brake Pedal
A brake pedal that seems to shake or pulsate while braking is often suffering from warped rotors. Rotors are what the brake pads rub against in order to generate the friction to slow your car. They may become warped due to excessive heat caused by elongated or harsh braking. If they do become warped it will reduce the surface area available to the pads to grab, which can reduce your carís ability to stop in a decent manner. If you have any trouble with the brakes do not hesitate to make an appointment with your local auto shop.
Accelerator Pedal is Shaking
An exhaust leak is often the main cause of an vibration that occurs during acceleration. If this is the case the shaking may be accompanied by a loud rumbling sound. Exhaust leaks are not only bad for your car, resulting in a decrease in fuel efficiency by as much as 25 percent, but leaks are potentially very bad for the passengers of the vehicle. The exhaust system is designed to remove hazardous exhaust fumes from the engine and pass them out the back of the car or truck. A leak that occurs prior to the passenger cabin may allow these dangerous gasses to get into the vehicle, putting the people inside at risk of poisoning.
Shaking Steering Wheel
A shaky steering wheel often indicates the need for a 2 or 4 wheel alignment. When your vehicle is out of alignment it means that at least one tire is pointing in a direction different from the rest while the car is supposed to be traveling straight. This makes your car try to travel in two directions at once, which is what causes the steering wheel to vibrate. A poor alignment is a serious safety concern due to the control issues in the car and it can cause numerous other problems as well.
