6 Common Reasons Your Car Won't Start
The starting system in any modern car or truck is quite complex, but there are really only a few issues that would prevent the vehicle's engine from firing up when the key is turned. It is important to properly explain the symptoms your car is exhibiting when telling the mechanic what is wrong with your vehicle so they can properly diagnose the issue. These are the most common no start problems and some of the symptoms you may notice if they occurring.
Failed Starter Motor
The starter motor is what gets the pistons moving up and down by spinning the flywheel. If the starter motor is unable to do its job you'll generally hear a single click or a series of clicks when you turn the key in the ignition.
The alternator is tasked with creating electricity while the vehicle motor is on, as it is connected to the drive belt. Excess electricity that is not immediately used is stored in the battery. If the alternator can't do its job the battery won't stay charged. You may experience slow cranking if the battery is not properly juiced up, and it will quickly die as you try to start your car.
Faulty Ignition Solenoid
The ignition solenoid is tasked with feeding the electricity necessary to the spark plugs in order to ignite the air fuel mixture. If it isn't working the motor will continuously crank over and over without starting.
Poor Fuel Delivery
Another problem that will cause elongated cranking is a fuel delivery issue. Three main points of concern are the fuel pump, fuel injectors and the fuel filter.
Corroded Spark Plugs
If your vehicle's spark plugs become corroded, as they will after about 30,000 miles or so, will not be able to produce a powerful enough spark to power the pistons up and down.
Perhaps the most common no start problem is a dead battery. Leaving a light on or a door ajar will drain your battery over a few hours or less. When you go to turn the key absolutely nothing will happen and the car will need to be jumpstarted.
