Tire Maintenance Tips
When you think of auto maintenance do you think of oil changes and filter replacements? Sure, but do you consider your tires? Tires provide us with the traction we need safely drive and worn out tires can cause a loss of control or stopping power. Be sure to pay attention for signs that you need to buy new tires to replace the ones that are causing you to lose miles per gallon, along with a safe ride. Use these tire maintenance tips to keep your car riding smooth.
Every so often take a look at your tires to check the tread. See if you can notice uneven wear, which can be caused by alignment problems and may cause inflation issues. If your tire seems a little low on air check for nails, screws, rocks or other debris stuck in the tread. Be sure to inspect the side walls for bubbling or ripped rubber and if you see or feel any of these warning signs, take your car to a knowledgeable auto repair expert that specializes in tires.
Monitor Tire Pressure
Many cars today have a tire pressure monitoring system that will measure the PSI in your vehicle's tires to insure they are properly inflated. If your car doesn't have this you can buy a small tool that will measure the PSI by hand for just a few dollars, a great addition to your glovebox. The right pressure can generally be found in your owner's manual or on the inside of the driver's door jam. Low tire pressure causes the outsides of a tire's tread to wear out quicker than normal, reduces fuel efficiency and lessens cornering control. If the tire pressure is too high you can wear out the center of the tire's tread early, decreasing braking power and cornering control as well.
Every 10,000 miles or so you should rotate your tires in order to prevent two tires from going bad before the other two. This happens when a car is either front wheel drive or wheel wheel drive. The tires receiving the power will wear out quicker than the other set, due to that power supply. Tire rotation is generally a free service at the place your purchased your tires.
