Preparing Your Car for Fall

Preparing Your Car for FallWith the back to school season upon us it is time to consider the changing weather. The warm, dry summer days will soon turn to cool, wet weather, which means it's time to consider your vehicle's needs for the coming months. There's a few simple things to check to ensure that your vehicle is going to remain safe and reliable, regardless of how short and rainy the days become. If you need any assistance with your vehicle's maintenance needs, be sure to visit your local auto repair shop.

Check the lights

The exterior lights of your vehicle are incredibly important to your own safety, and that of others on the road. If a headlight, tail light, brake light, reverse light or any other light goes out, it's important that you replace it as soon as possible. In some jurisdictions it is even illegal to drive without proper lighting.

Check the wipers

Before you get stuck in a downpour of rain or a winter snow flurry you'll want to make sure that your wipers are good to go. You can test them by using the windshield cleaning feature of your vehicle, which sprays water on the windshield and the wipers remove any dirt and grime. If the dirt isn't removed or is just smeared across your windshield, it may be time for new wipers.

Check the tires

Now is a good time to check the condition of your tires. If you stick a penny in the tread and can see the top of Lincoln's head, then it's time for new tires. Other signs include the inability to remain properly inflated, bloated sides or cracked rubber.

Oil & Filters

At your next oil change, be sure to have the air and fuel filter inspected during the service. Summer is often more dusty than other months, which can really contaminate the filters of your car, including the cabin air filter.

Safety kit

To ensure optimal safety be sure to put together a safety kit for your car that you can use in case of an accident. It should include flares, safety triangles and a first aid kit.
