Does my car need a wheel alignment?
As your car drives down the road it will regularly come into contact with potholes and the occasional curb. These bumps and bruises, along with just general driving, can throw a vehicle's wheel alignment off. Proper wheel alignment means that your car's tires are straight when the steering wheel is straight. If you ever experience any of the following issues it may mean your car needs a two wheel or four wheel alignment service.
Drifting, also referred to as pulling, means that your car will move toward one side of the road or the other when you don't want it to do so. You may experience hard or soft pulling.
- Soft pulling - Soft pulling is almost unnoticeable in any other way than your vehicle move to the side. You don't really have to fight the steering wheel to keep going straight, just maintain a firm grip.
- Hard pulling - Hard pulling is when you have to tug and yank on the steering wheel to keep the car moving in a straight line.
Vibrating steering wheel
A vibration in the steering wheel may occur if the alignment is off because if one tire is pointed in a direction that is not the same as the others your car will be pulled in two separate directions, thus causing the shaky wheel.
Crooked steering wheel
A very obvious sign that something is amiss is if your steering wheel is off center when the vehicle is driving straight. This means that the logo on the center of your steering wheel is not presented as it should be. If you need to hold the steering wheel at a funny angle in order to keep your car moving in the direction you want it to than something is definitely wrong and the guidance of an auto repair mechanic should be sought.
Uneven tire wear
If you suffer from any of these issues the next step would be to check out your tires. If you notice that one tire is wearing differently from the others there is a good chance that a wheel alignment issue is present and you'll likely need new tires!
